Mabelle Douglas

Mabelle Keene Douglas, age 96, of Valparaiso, passed away April 27 at Pheasant Ridge Assisted Living in Roanoke, VA. She was born on November 20, 1915 to Thomas and Elizabeth Keene in Union Township. Mabelle is survived by her son, Thomas (Mary) and granddaughter Katherine (Jeffery) Harmon and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Gordon; parents Thomas and Elizabeth; brothers Norman and Ralph; sister Elizabeth (Betty) Havran and sisters-in-laws Marge and Juanita. A lifelong resident of Porter County, Mabelle graduated from Wheeler High School and Indiana University. She married Gordon 30 days after he returned from World War II on November 30, 1945. She taught elementary school for 38 years most of which were at Northview School in the Valparaiso Community Schools, where she once served as president of the teachers association. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the Valparaiso United Methodist Church, where she was an active member and sang in the choir, and the Order of Eastern Stars. Mabelle was an avid gardener who would spend her summer vacations tending her yard and garden and traveling. She also made dolls which she would give as presents and sold at local art fairs. A memorial service will be held at Bartholomew’s Funeral Home at 11am on Saturday, May 19th with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10am. Interment will at Graceland Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society or the United Methodist Church.
